Forensic dentistry, which is sometimes referred to as forensic odontology, is an exciting and dynamic area of dentistry where dentistry interacts with the law. While the names are interchangeable, the field of forensic dentistry is commonly recognized by the identification of human remains, but it involves much more. It is true that the majority of the case work for many forensic dentists relates primarily to dental identification but they can also become involved in other areas which include mass disaster dental identification, human abuse cases, bite mark patterns and dental-legal issues.

Professional education in forensic dentistry is available in varying degrees from many of the dental schools in the United States, both as an elective short course as well as longer courses that can take more than a semester. Postgraduate forensic dental education is available from many sources and in many different forms. The most widely recognized postgraduate forensic dental education opportunities are those presented by the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and the University of Texas-San Antonio-Odontology Fellowship Program. Many universities and colleges also sponsor postgraduate education in forensic dentistry.

The most widely recognized forensic dental organizations in the United States include  The American Academy of Forensic Sciences-Odontology Section (AAFS), The American Society of Forensic Dentistry (ASFO), and The American Board of Forensic Odontology (ABFO).
